Bishopâs mind had been an empty horizon, a line, an innocent line, geometryâs uninterrupted point in motion â graphite in the morning, iodine in the evening. Barbaraâs jealousy had him watching for a speck of interest.
Kristin Scott Thomas at the Royal Court
âShe has a mannerism. Did you notice?â
They were in the Downstairs Bar, drinking tap water and, between bites, holding their home-made cheese sandwiches under the table.
âI think sheâs a brilliant Arkadina.â
âYou just think sheâs beautiful. She is beautiful. Fantastic. Those eyelids,â Milly said. âBut sheâs got a tell. Like a poker player. She doesnât think sheâs beautiful. Or beautiful enough. You must have noticed.â
Bishop raised his eyebrows.
âThe thing about being beautiful,â Milly continued, âis that itâs great while it lasts. But it doesnât last. It canât. So you start to feel anxious. Beautiful, but anxious. At first, the anxiousness looks like acting. You pass it off as acting. It gives you an expression to your beauty. An accent. So youâre not just a beautiful egg like Emmanuelle Béart. But really itâs just that youâre afraid the audience will notice the signs. That your beauty is threatened.â
âAnd you saw the signs?â Bishopâs question wasnât really a question.
âHow many kids has she had?â
âDunno. Two or three, I think. By that French doctor.â
âThatâs why she doesnât like being looked at. It isnât the face. The face is fabulous. Itâs her belly she doesnât like, doesnât trust. Watch her right hand. Never stops smoothing her dress over her tummy. OK. OK. Never is an exaggeration. You know what I mean.â
It was true. He checked in the second half.
Kristin Scott Thomas with stretch marks, smocking, the navel in its plump stoup.
âThing is,â Milly added before they went their opposite directions on the tube, âthat insecurity is great for Arkadina. Trigorin fancies Nina because sheâs younger. Arkadina has a grown-up son.â
âSo it was deliberate, you think?â Bishop asked.
âMight be. Might not be. Might have been intuitive. Or maybe she does it all the time. Weâll have to see her in something else. Thereâs my train. Bye.â
She ran for the escalator, her raincoat buoyed behind her, and skittered sideways down the steps like a foal.
